Fall Themed Math Journal Prompts

In addition to math work stations, my students will be using a math journal this year. The teachers in my building have been focused on inquiry based teaching and learning in the past few years. We want our students to be problems solvers and often challenge them with problems that are "hard" for them to encourage them to use what they know, think mathematically and explain their thinking.  It's amazing what they often discover in the process!

My goal is to have my students work on solving a problem in their math journals 2 times each week. I use composition notebooks for their math journals. A cover sheet that says "Math Journal" (like on the preview below) goes on the front. Each time the students are given a problem to solve, they get a slip of paper to glue on the next available page in their journal. They show their work on the same page (and sometimes on the back if they run out of space).

After they have had time to work, think and (hopefully) discover, we have a discussion to share our thinking.  During the discussion, several students volunteer to show their thinking under our document camera.  I just loaded a packet of my fall themed journal prompts on Tpt. You can click on the image below if you'd like to check them out.

  2. Hi Kimberly- I am curious about where you are getting the info that the students will be doing in their journal. Is it from your math curriculum or are you coming up with your own problems? I love this idea! I have been trying to find a better way to see my students progress in problem solving and this seems like it would really work well!
